Most Prestigious Golf Tournaments

With the comeback of Tiger Woods, golf as a sport has become very popular again. In this article, we will talk about the most prestigious golf tournaments. These are known as Majors and there are 4 Major Championships every year, that are held on a specific date during the year. In the history of golf, only Bobby Jones has won all of them in the same year.

Majors Championships

The term majors began to be used in 1960 when Arnold Palmer won the first two games of the season: Masters of Augusta and US Open. The golfer commented among his teammates that if he won the British Open in addition to the PGA Championship, he would have completed his own “Grand Slam”, just as Bobby Jones did in 1930, but Palmer’s feat was not carried out.

In 1934 a new โ€œmajorโ€ was opened – the Master of Augusta. In addition to the appearance of professional golf between 40 and 50, it was determined that the four major tournaments of this sport would be: The open of the United States, the Augusta Masters, the British Open Golf Championship and the PGA Championship, all are organized by a different association but ratify their special status.

Of these, the oldest is the British Open which is the only one played outside the United States of America and the Augusta Master is unique because it has no variation in its headquarters, so every year it is played in the same field.

What Do Golfers Gain by Becoming Champions?

Well, they receive 100 points from the official classification of golfers, combined with a cash prize that varies according to the tournament in which they participate. There is a “golf season” and each one is celebrated in the following order:

    • 2nd) United States Open: the weekend of the third Sunday of June is played. It is played on any golf course in the United States and is organized by the Golf Association of that country.
